  1. great browser after very long time…. after i used it i can just say-
    ‘strongly recommended’….

    absolutely great work bro!!!

  2. ever used Star Browser until now, but i’m definitely impressed. UI is really slick, although it could use just a but more polish. What’s really impressive is that the dev has even brought us this update, really that’s fantastic! Keep up the awesome work!

    • Depends what you mean by polish really, I do have more UI changes planned, which will modernise it a bit more.

  3. Nice. The UI is well done but I still think that an onscreen back button (or perhaps back swipe) is more convenient. But the longpress and button island seems nicely done though.

The rendering needs some cleanup and it doesn’t show animated gifs very good. Also sometimes backgrounds aren’t rendered at all. It’s far from a finished product but it works nice. As usual disabling javascript seems to make it a bit faster.

Visiting El Reg isn’t as fun as on the stock browser. But this shows some great promise. Perhaps you can port this to e.g. RISC OS too? Or help the guys from Netsurf whom can’t seem to get e.g. javascript working….

    • Swiping is impossible on it, those kind of actions don’t work with the Flickable component.

Backgrounds are locked to white because of a stupid bug in the Webkit which doesn’t clear the last page.
The App is based on Qt and the Qt Webkit, whose port to Symbian is pretty damn bad,

  4. Perhaps a few tips.

Swip from top down to get a adres/URL input.
    swipe to right: go forward
    swipe to left: go back
swip up from bottom: reveal buttons

BTW. I noticed that i can’t access my routers configuration webpage with this browser. Tried with 2 different routers.

  5. Hi Allstar12345!

I really find the browser funky and modern. I’d love to use it as default. But it crashes on my 700, when I try to play YouTube- or Vimeo-videos.

    Take care!

    Bobo

PS: No browser can make webpages load more quickly on a Symbian (Belle FP2) phone, right?!

    • Hi Bobo,

Which useragent are you using for Youtube?

Youtube works fine here, on IOS7 UA on a 808 FP2.

“PS: No browser can make webpages load more quickly on a Symbian (Belle FP2) phone, right?!”

      No Comment :P

  6. Hi Allstar12345!

Thanks for your answer! I tried different UAs, also iOS 7.0 and 7.1. And with none did the browser start playing movies, neither on YouTube nor on Vimeo… The browser is out, before any film could start…

    Cheers!

    Bobo

    • Hi Bobo,

Certainly a weird issue you’re having,
I’m not sure what to suggest since I cannot reproduce the issue, you may need to reset the Application and remove the following:
      E:/AllstarSoftware/StarBrowser
      C:\data\temp\qml-webview-network-cache-starbrowser\

      • Hello Allstar12345!

Thanks again for your reply! Dailymotion-vidz fail to work as well, by the way. I think it’s a memory issue with the Nokia 700. They aren’t nearly as bad as the C5-03 that I also have. But they are bad. Then again, the apps “cuteTube” and “MetroTube” work like a charm… Maybe a friend of yours still has an ole 700 in his or her drawer. And you can test your app on that. It’s a legit Symbian Belle device after all. So it shouldn’t have these issues. I erased the folder on E:, like you suggested . (There was none in C:/data/temp.) That didn’t help, either.

        I’m at my wit’s end.

        Have a good one!

        Bobo

PS: Sorry for the other, identical, post at the wrong place…

        • Hi Bobo,
CuteTube uses the default OS video player, can’t speak on Metro Tube though,

My friend with a 700 just sits there with a spinning loading circle,

Not a clue what to suggest now tbh.

          • Hey! Thanks for the quick reply, Allstar12345!

See. Our 700s are fragile li’l critters. At least your friend’s doesn’t outright eject the StarBrowser… But a spinning wheel should just remain a great song and not something one looks at on one’s cell… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbT-EhzaC90

As I said: I love the look and feel of your app. I wish it could become my standard browser!

Maybe this can spur you into finding a solution for us wretched 700-users. ;-)

            Cheers!

            Bobo

          • Thanks for your quick answer, Allstar12345!

See, how “difficult” those dainty 700’s are! Maybe seeing your friend with a “spinning wheel” melted your heart so that you’ll invest in finding out what makes the 700’s act up… “Spinning Wheel” should be a song, not something one experiences on a mobile phone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbT-EhzaC90

As I said, I’d love to make the “Star” my standard browser.

            Cheers!

            Bobo

          • I know why it crashes, or rather the reason (not the solution). I also have a 700 and if you have mobile data turned off it will give a warning just before it crashes. I tried it with mobile data on and it simply spins, as Allstar mentioned. Turn it off again and it crashes. It happens with the latest version as well (1.70). Ideally, it should only use mobile data if it explicitly used (no Wifi connection). Otherwise, it shouldn’t need to be on.

By the way, amazing browser – up there with the best if the bugs can be worked out. I’d would certainly consider donating if I knew it will be developed further.

          • A few people have mentioned that, seems there could be a issue with error code handling when the load finished signal is emitted (It handles HTTP redirects if it needs to)
Saying that I can’t reproduce it myself at the moment.

1.71 is planned, after that probably nothing since I have already switched phones, any donations will help towards 1.71.

  7. Please add Persian (Farsi) Language to New version Star Browser.

لطفا به نسخه جدید زبان فارسی را هم اضافه کنید. با تشکر

      • Hello Allstar12345!

  8. Can you give an application to Turkish language support? Turkey is showing too much interest in your application.

    • Sorry but as I said to ali above I have no plans to add multilanguage support, the future of the Application is unclear at this moment.

  9. I can see the huge potential this app has; in many things it exceeds opera mobile, the UI rocks, etc. but its also true this isnt a finished product yet. For example I cant access fanfiction.net, it just loads till ten percent and stays in the page it already is. When trying the same in opera, it asks if it should accept a security certificate which name doesnt correspond to the pages own name. Using Nokia 700 Belle FP2
    Thanks!

    • Hi Paulo,

I took a look and that appears to be a https site, Symbian struggles with SSL Certificates these days, also I spotted on their website this message “We have re-enabled access for those with extremely old browsers such as those from Nokia e71 cellphones and other mobile devices. Outdated browsers support was phased out in our most recent security upgrade but we have made some changes to extend their compatibility. ”

Unless they can change their site to bog standard http for Symbian devices then there’s nothing useful I can do on that.

  10. Great browser. And great that people are still supporting Symbian development.

The only one that seems to work with:

    html5.grooveshark.com

the only problem I have accessing this site is that when I try to use the volume rocker key on the side of my 808PV the pages scroll up and down and I can’t increase the volume of he music I’m listening to. Its too quiet. How can I increase the volume ?

    • Hi jruss808,

The volume keys don’t actually change the HTML5 webpage volume regardless, Nokia never bothered to link them together when they ported the webkit.

Having never used Grooveshark in my life I can’t really comment on how to change the volume.

  11. здраствуйте все у вас замечательно но хотелось бы иметь регулировку звука кнопками громкостями , как реализовать в других плеерах знаю сам или хотя бы исходники в л.с

    • Hello all you wonderful but I would like to have the volume control buttons volume levels , how to implement other players know himself, or at least the sources in HP

      • I’m afraid that’s not possible for me, that code is too far down in the WebView for me to access without serious and large changes.

  12. I try Star browser on my Nokia N8.
Yes it load website fast, but I can not call a website with the url box.The browser did not load the website. I have to use google search
website or the search function within browser.
Also the browser use every time google uk. I change that in the menu but it does not change.

    • Press the clear button then type the url without http://
      Then it will load.
And there are two ways to change the homepage, see Tips for details

  13. Is the application version is defective can not install on my Nokia 808 Pureview the failed installation … Please correct
Thank U
Raymon
